brocken spectre: the apparently huge, magnified shadow thrown by a climber on high ground looking downwards into the mist or cloud with a low sun behind. Also called ‘brocken bow’ or ‘mountain spectre’. (German Brockengespenst).

The head of the figure is often surrounded by the glowing halo-like rings of a ‘glory’: rings of coloured, diffracted light.

Dedicated to the slate men and women of North Wales.
